March 26 hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the streets of London to protest the British government's economic policy. During the demonstration, security was guaranteed by some 4,500 police officers.
The head of the Trade Union Congress of Great Britain, Brendan Barber, told reporters that the day will be the biggest fight in recent decades. In total, the protests have involved between 200,000 and 500,000 people.
The main cause of the protest is unpopular economic policy aimed at reducing budget costs. David Cameron's government, which came to power in May 2010, announced not only the reduction of the budget, but also widespread layoffs in the public sector.
The budget cuts have reached 163 million pounds in five years (about 231 million dollars). Affecting workers in health and education sectors, as well as students and retirees. In fact, the most active participants in earlier protests were students, unhappy with the increase in university fees. On occasion, student demonstrations became transformed into riots.
